PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of Hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Exploration and production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Exploration, by earth scientists, and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry’s two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure.

The combined efforts of geologists and petroleum engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems, completions and petroleum production engineering.

Career Goals 

Petroleum engineers are divided into several groups:

Petroleum geologists: Find hydrocarbons by analyzing subsurface structures with geological and geophysical methods.

Reservoir engineers: Work to optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production levels and enhanced oil recovery techniques. They use computer simulations to assist in the identification of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential.

Production engineers: Manage the interface between the reservoir and the well through tasks such as perforations, sand control, artificial lift, downhole flow control and downhole monitoring equipment. They also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas and water).

Drilling engineers: Manage the technical aspects of drilling both production and injection wells. They work in multidisciplinary teams alongside other engineers, scientists, drilling teams and contractors.

Natural gas engineers: Devise methods to improve oil and gas extraction and production and determine the need for new or modified tool designs. Oversee drilling and offer technical advice.

Oil Exploration Engineers: Simulate reservoir performance for different recovery techniques, using computer models. Specify and supervise well modification and stimulation programs to maximize oil and gas recovery. Direct and monitor the completion and evaluation of wells, well testing, or well surveys. Coordinate activities of workers engaged in research, planning, and development. Take samples to assess the amount and quality of oil, the depth at which resources lie, and the equipment needed to properly extract them. Supervise the removal of drilling equipment, the removal of any waste, and the safe return of land to structural stability when wells or pockets are exhausted. Test machinery and equipment to ensure that it is safe and conforms to performance specifications. Interpret drilling and testing information for personnel. Maintain records of drilling and production operations. Monitor production rates, and plan rework processes to improve production. Write technical reports for engineering and management personnel. Evaluate findings to develop, design, or test equipment or processes. Inspect oil and gas wells to determine that installations are completed. Design or modify mining and oil field machinery and tools, applying engineering principles. Conduct engineering research experiments to improve or modify mining and oil machinery and operations. Assess costs and estimate the production capabilities and economic value of oil and gas wells, to evaluate the economic viability of potential drilling sites. Assist engineering and other personnel to solve operating problems. Confer with scientific, engineering, and technical personnel to resolve design, research, and testing problems. Coordinate the installation, maintenance, and operation of mining and oil field equipment. Design and implement environmental controls on oil and gas operations. Assign work to staff to obtain maximum utilization of personnel. Develop plans for oil and gas field drilling, and for product recovery and treatment. Analyze data to recommend placement of wells and supplementary processes to enhance production.

DETAILS OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

SSSCE APPLICANTS

Candidates must have credit passes (A-D) in THREE CORE SUBJECTS in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and passes in THREE SCIENCE ELECTIVES in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

WASSCE APPLICANTS

Candidates must have passes (A1-C6) in THREE CORE SUBJECTS in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and passes in THREE SCIENCE ELECTIVES in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (GCE) ‘ADVANCE’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Candidates must have passes in THREE (3) SUBJECTS (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also the applicant must have had credits passes (Grade 6) in five (5) GCE ORDINARY LEVEL subjects including English, Mathematics and an Arts subject for science students.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Candidates must have attained 25 years of age and must have passes in FIVE SUBJECTS at SHS LEVEL including, English Language and Mathematics or credits in FIVE SUBJECTS at GCE ORDINARY LEVEL including, English Language and Mathematics. In addition, candidates must have relevant working experience and must pass an interview conducted by the Department.
