BSc. Information Communication Technology

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The BSc Information Communication Technology is designed primarily to meet the needs of professionals and practitioners in the ICT industry with practical knowledge in information technology and its allied fields.

The programme has both similarities and dissimilarities with the Computer Science programme. Whereas the Computer Science programme is geared towards those who are mathematically inclined with strong academic interests, the Information Systems Sciences programme is tilted towards those with strong professional and practical interests. The Computer Science  programme puts emphasis on theory and foundations subjects like programming languages, data structures, graphics and visualisation, algorithms, operating systems, software engineering, modelling and simulation, numerical methods, parallel programming, automata, databases and networks, at a high level. The Information Communication Technology emphasis management and business legacy systems (mainframes and enterprise computing ) as well as application development for windows and other operating systems (C++, Java, C#, Visual Basic, spreadsheets, etc) particularly for large management information systems and database systems, as well as security issues.

This programme will be particularly useful for those who want to gain the technical knowledge to use and apply computer technologies in industry, the skills to design and manage innovative information systems, expertise in high demand areas of the computing industry, such as eCommerce and information security. This programme will be of particular interest to ICT professionals with Higher National Diploma (HND) and other certificate holders who will want a more advanced professional and technical training.

Career Goals 

Graduates of this course could find employment across a wide spectrum of scientific careers, particularly thoseS that involve telecommunication, networking, geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing experts, web management, systems administration, information management and security, and the technical and organisational skills to convert that data into useful information. Graduates could seek employment as Information Architects, Systems Analysts, Software Architects, Computer Service Providers, Information Security Experts, Programmers, Business Information Analysts, and Business Managers.

DETAILS OF ENTRY REQUIREMENT

SSSCE APPLICANTS

The minimum requirements for admission into the programme are credit passes in three core subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) including English Language and Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and credit passes in any three elective subjects. The aggregate score of the 6 subjects should not exceed 24 in the SSSCE. All passes should be grade D (SSSCE) or better.

WASSCE APPLICANTS

The minimum requirements for admission into the programme are credit passes in three core subjects at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) including English Language and Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and credit passes in any three elective subjects. The aggregate score of the 6 subjects should not exceed 36 in the WASSCE. All passes should be grade C6 (WASSCE) or better.

GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (GCE) ‘ADVANCE’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have credits in at least five West African School Certificate GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and one Science Subject and three passes at GCE A-Level. At least one of the passes at A’level must be Grade D or better. 

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years or above at the time of application and have credits in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects including English Language and Mathematics, or minimum requirement for WASSCE/SSSCE  and in addition pass an entrance Examination and / or an interview. Applicant must show proof of birth age which is at least 5 years old at the time of admission.

HND APPLICANTS

HND (Computer Studies) holders Second Class Lower Divisions or better will be considered for admission to Level 200 in addition to the Minimum Entry Requirement at WASSCE/SSSCE or five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level credits including English Language and Mathematics. In addition, applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience.

FOREIGN APPLICANTS

Foreign students may be considered for admission if the hold qualifications equivalent to those stated above, provided they are proficient in English Language. Foreign certificates eg. NECO will have to be evaluated by the National Accreditation Board. Applicants must ensure this is done before submitting application. 

Other qualifications acceptable for consideration for admission include International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade 13 examination and other external qualifications which have equivalences to the WASSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A levels).
